As a student I am fortunate to have up to a months holiday after every term. This creates the perfect opportunity to explore our beautiful country, South Africa.

In the July holiday my family and I tackled the well spoken of Babylonstoren farm. Situated about 10km from Paarl in the Western Cape the farm is surrounded by the awesome Simonsberg, Du Toitskloof and Franschhoek mountains.

In 1692, Babylonstoren farm was granted to burgher Pieter van der Byl by the then Governor of the Cape, Simon van der Stel. The buildings and garden still largely maintain the original architecture. Today the farm is established with a hotel, spa, self sufficient garden, restaurant and cellar.

Unfortunately we only had the time to visit the garden but what an experience on its own. More than 300 varieties of plants in the garden are edible or have medicinal value, with everything from blood oranges to mushrooms supplying the farm’s two restaurants with produce.

Enterance fee is only R10 per person and one can taste all you want while walking through a lush fresh paradise. I truly encourage you to add Babylonstoren to your adventure list.

Tip: Make sure to set aside enough time to explore Babylonstoren in all its aspects. Plan your day accordingly. I would suggest that one should be there as the farm opens at 8am to participate in all the activities before 5pm when they start to close.

Love,

Maryke
